Surprising Impressions: Xreal’s AR Glasses Exceed Expectations in Spatial Computing Demo

AR glasses had a great year in 2023. I, as a tech enthusiast, typed this article while wearing AR glasses on a flight to CES. However, current AR glasses in the market are limited to mirroring the display of laptops or phones. Xreal Air 2 Ultra, a new pair of AR glasses with spatial computing capabilities, was demonstrated at CES 2024. Priced at $699, it is much more affordable than Apple’s $3,500 device. Xreal Air 2 Ultra is designed for comfort and eye wellness and has the ability to project standard 2D applications and widgets on the user’s real-life vision. The glasses are designed for developers and support handtracking, 3D mesh creation, semantic scene understanding, and more. In a demo, it was shown that Xreal Air 2 Ultra can view spatial videos captured by the iPhone 15 Pro series. However, the glasses need to be tethered to a device to work, affecting the device’s battery. Overall, the Xreal Air 2 Ultra shows promise in advancing the AR glasses market.
