In 2023, VR and MR headsets had a great year, and Qualcomm unveiled a new chip, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, which is expected to power upcoming headsets such as Meta Quest and HTC Vive. The new chip boasts improvements in GPU and CPU frequency, support for higher resolution, and on-device AI capabilities. It is aimed at creating headsets with feature parity to Apple’s Vision Pro, but at an accessible price point. The chip was made in collaboration with Google and Samsung, with plans to compete with Apple’s rumored headset. Reports suggested that the three companies are redesigning their XR platform to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro. It remains to be seen how the new Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 will stack up against Apple’s M2-R1 duo.
