Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder have developed AI tools that read and evaluate college admission essays. They have partnered with the Common App and assembled a data set of 300,000 students who applied to college in 2008 and 2009. The AI tool can read and evaluate the essays based on personal qualities such as leadership, mindset, and teamwork. The tool is designed to help students who might otherwise get overlooked and eliminate personal bias in the admissions process. However, the AI tool is not meant to replace human admissions officers, but rather supplement their inferences. Additional work is needed to ensure accuracy and efficiency of the AI tools before they can be effectively used.
